"I can't believe I'm going to have to take Bread seriously" I said out loud to particularly no one. Since this tape sold last week I've had it on my Spotify shuffle I use to familiarize myself with titles like this than outside of the hits I have no reference point.
The lead track is actually a strong Mike Nesmith sounding number "Why Do You Keep Me Waiting" complete with fuzz guitar and an instrumental break that sounds downright Deadish. The big hit here is "Make It With You" which on the 8-track was bumped to open track three, whereas on the album it comes after the opener. The deep cuts start to emerge, particularly the "rockin'" ones like "Easy Love," "Blue Satin Pillow" and "Call On Me." The butter on the Bread of course is the David Gates sung ballads served up with splash of syrup such as "Look What You've Done."
As far as the band's timeline goes this is the sophomore release, from the year after their 1969 debut. Oddly enough the follow-up hit to the #1 Make It, "It Don't Matter To Me," was a re-recorded song from the first album. On The Water was skipped over for follow-up singles. Critically reviled (this got 1 star in the first Rolling Stone Record Guide), there was a pervasive feeling that Bread was somehow an unleavened loaf.
Flatbread is fine every once and a while.
