This 1986 GBH album is in that sweet spot, sort've like Flick Of The Switch by AC/DC where the band has created their masterpieces, are still close to the peak of their powers as a live touring band, and have seemingly tossed off an album of less significance with many more to go. The difference between a band in it's first decade and a band as institution. That the songs generally didn't make setlists as the years wore on over many albums and tours proves this, but when you listen to it, the band itself sounds great.
I first saw GBH on this tour at the Paradise in Boston early all ages on the punks vs skins tour with Agnostic Front opening. Midnight Madness and Beyond was at the radio station, so I taped it before the show. I had a strong memory of a red label on the radio copy and forgot that the used one I found a year or two later had the "Camouflage" label found on the more metal releases on Combat. This copy got flooded out in my storage space with the formerly clean box of F/G/H titles sometime around hurricane Sandy, the discovery of which was the initial prompt of selling off my vinyl. So this nomally $25 album went for $14 and change over ten years after I put it on sale.
Listening to this now, the band sounds great and there are some excellent songs here. My favorite was the opener which really has a band definining guitar sound and who could deny "Go!/Wake Up The Whole Worlds Gone! Wake Up The Whole Worlds Gone! Wake Up The Whole Worlds Gone/Gone LIMPWRISTED!!!!" The other hits for me were "How Come," ("How Come!/How Come! Yeah, How Come!") "Future Fugitives," "Sea of Madness," "Too Much" and the title track. The other one that sounded great was the slower goth band anomoly "Horror Story." The rest of the album I forgot then and am not gasping in the greatness of an overlooked track now, with so many top line tracks overall I bumped the grade up to A-.
Sometimes slightly past prime is still top level.
