Modern Music, the 4th Be Bop Deluxe album and the second to come out in 1976 was an epic and at time inconsequntial sounding album. It kicks off with a good opener that sound straight out of Gerry Rafferty territory except with better lyrics. I couldn't hear Gerry singing "Orphans of Babylon."
The "modern" aspect of this album is a mild synth overtone. Be Bop Deluxe never really was a band that you thought of as having epics and this normal length record has 16 tracks. "Bring Back The Spark" has the guitar that we heard on early records but there's a certain pianos & synths think that comes in. It isn't quite the new romantic era but you can see the writing on the wall.
The second side kicks off with a radio picking up snippets of past songs like "Axe Victim" and "Sister Seagull" before kicking into the title track. The song is less manifesto or critique and more of a tribute with musical quotes out of the Beatles Abbey Road. Bill Nelson's guitar is always going to come in an save the day on "Dance of The Humanoids" before we get a reprise of "Modern Music" before the cowbell kicks in on the albums best track "Forbidden Lovers."
Takin' care of business.
