You might be able to intellectually argue other Stones albums are better, but I don't care, this was my first and ultimately my favorite. Christmas 1978 my mother chose this from a 30+ album list to choose from since it was a band she was familiar with. It probably did quite a bit to help shape my worldview and I am much better off for it.
A young Jesse Jackson got some considerable hand wringing about Mick's learned insight on Black girls but in Mick's defense, it was the 70's and he was fucking everybody since the 60's. He just wanted to share his cocksmith insights and take the piss. Laughter, joy and loneliness. And sex and sex and sex and sex! The Rolling Stones were still bad boys in 1978 and not yet corporate shills for Jovan or Hilfingers runway or a goddamn bank or for fucks' sake AARP. Nowadays even an anti-slavery song like "Brown Sugar" gets tossed under the bus.
In 1978 "Miss You" was segregated from Rock radio and "Far Away Eyes" didn't get any radio play either. The Stones didn't care about such fundamental formalism. Disco and Country were fair game to kick off the sides and the cover was the R&B they always covered, this time The Temptations "Just My Imagination."
My favorite song on this was the Keef sung "Before They Make Me Run." He was still doing high grade dope and having some hassle from the man about it. But that didn't stop him.
Another goodbye to another good friend.
