I came home from work today with a strong urge to hear "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?" More Hot Rocks was sitting on top of the pile waiting to be packed and shipped, so onto the turntable it went. I had to wait until mid-way through the second side, but I got there. Whew!
More Hot Rocks, the bastard cousin of Hot Rocks, was actually the one that got 5 stars in the Rolling Stone Record Guide. For me, it was Hot Rocks, but I really can't say track for track today there is anything less than perfect 60's Stones on this second volume.
That their "also-rans" could produce a second perfect double compilation in their first 7 years or so is food for thought. In what world is "Not Fade Away" an also ran? Or "Child Of The Moon?" Or "Dandelion?" Or "2,000 Light Years From Home?" Some complain about the early years covers on the 4th side, but they had to come from somewhere. Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and Berry Gordy ain't exactly "fazed cookies."
It's the fuckin' Stones after all!
