I got Night In The Ruts on record in the early 80's as a Columbia House overstock close out copy for like $3 and this remastered CD from 2008 that sold I got a couple years ago in a CD lot. This initially was a play once and file away sort of record at the time, I thought it was a record of a band in decline. In hindsight, they sound pretty damn good here, same as Draw The Line from a year before. The only hit on it was a cover of "Remember (Walking In The Sand)" by the Shangri-La's. The album expectedly went Gold in the US after a few months but didn't hit the Platinum mark until 1994.
For as big as Aerosmith were in 1979 in Massachusetts, I really don't remember the 2 songs that had early MTV-era videos, the opening 2 tracks "No Surprize" and "Chiquita." "No Surprize" immediately jumped out at me and considering "Draw The Line" is my favorite Aerosmith song, this one is right up my alley. I guess shootin' shit at the bar in the lyric meant no regular airplay compared to the big nostalgic hit. This is a different type of nostalgia song about 1971 Max's Kansas City scene the band came out of. The next song is awesome too but I thought the lyric "Chiquita, Love Chiquita" was a toxic twins anthem about TEQUILA! No tequila! Then I just assumed when I realized the song was named Chiquita that Chiquita said "No tequila!" because she was busy doing other things with the toxic twins. We'll leave that up to your imagination and mine but I swear I was just thinking about an alternative alcohol while I mislead that lyric, not sex and blow.
The tracks that were the most played live on the record were "Bone To Bone" (last played in 1995) and the other stand out "Three Mile Smile" which stood out to me as a Led Zep sorta thing and also a feel like "Bright Light Fright" from Draw The Line.
Right IN THE NUTS!
