Golden Smog were the Mpls supergroup of roots rockers primarily known as a Jayhawks spinoff with Gary Louris and Marc Perlman. Jeff Tweedy is in it as Scot Summit and even wrote "Pecan Pie." So is Dan Murphy from Soul Asylum. The singer is Kraig Johnson from Run Westy Run. The band had a run roughly from 1992-2007.
One thing about this album is that of 14 songs, at least half jump out at instantly enjoyable. The video track "V" kicks off the album tributing a girl with a nose ring. The New Englander in me is disturbed when Tweedy pronounces Pecan as Pe-cawn like the film festival, but I guess that's just a regionalism. All you ever wanted and all you'll ever need "Yesterday Cried" proclaims. He won't be coming home no more we are told in the track of the same name. The guy that steals the weed? Immortalized in "He's A Dick."
There are a couple covers. Dallas 70's soul singer Bobby Patterson's "She Don't Have To See You" and the Faces "Glad and Sorry" from Ooh La La. A fine effort from the dollar bin that brightened up my day.
Never wrong. Always right.
