When Uncle Tupelo split, I was more of a "Farrar man" and didn't think much of Wilco until I heard "I Got You" from Being There, that song knocked me out and made me need this one. I would get their releases though Summer Teeth, but nothing else they did really moved me the way the press insisted they would.
That said, the debut A.M. is a solid set of songs. "Casino Queen" is a great one with a Country Honk Bluster. "That's Not The Issue" is another great one in the Byrds-Sweetheart of the Rodeo vein. Most of the album is awash in 90's alter-mix which, gasp, sounds dated, although not as dated as things got compression-wise 5-10 years later. Still, songs like "Pick Up The Change" and "Box Full of Letters" are good examples of straightforward singer songwriter post-indie rock in 1995.
Another one of those bands where I might have bought loyally and never got beyond a listen per record for the span of a decade.
This one is quite a bit better than I remember, though the back end drags a little bit.
