This was the first Wilco album that I really liked. I heard AM and initially thought it didn't come near what Son Volt were doing. This one was the first to get the best of list year end acclaim on the top 10 of the year level. I don't know if it rated THAT high for me in 1996, but there were two songs that absolutely blew my mind.
The best track for me hands down is "I Got You (At The End Of The Century)." What a great song! Oh'! The next best track is "Outtaside (Outta Mind)." Alright! So good it has a reprise version on the second disc in mid-60's Beach Boys style. See a pattern here?"
As for the best of the rest, "Forget The Flowers" for the sentiment and the grand finale country honk "Dreamer In My Dreams" were the ones that made my ears perk up.
The rest of the double CD plays more like a typical Wilco record. Pleasant piano driven songs, some memorable, some less so.
Much like the catalog as a whole.
