Bill Direeen from New Zealand was important enough to have a documentary Bill Direen: A Memory of Others back in 2017. Someday all musicians will have documentaries, and I haven't seen this one or even knew of its existence until today. I probably bought this single back around 1991 at In Your Ear because there was some sort of Flying Nun affiliation or perhaps even a sticker on it to alert me that Chris Knox, who I was a big fan of at the time, played on the record.
It seems these recordings were released in New Zealand in the 80's unless they were rerecorded for this issue. I honestly can't tell and the single has been shipped so I can't A/B it vs what is online. It looks like "Skulls" was released as Bildireen as far back as 1984 and the A side from a 1983 album by Builders that Flying Nun issued called Beatin Hearts. It just seems odd that this band would be reconstituted 8 years later to sound exactly the same. But who knows?
Stranger things have happened in the history of music.
