Named after a 1967 book by Arthur Koestler about philosophical psychology, the 4th Police album, Ghost In The Machine, overall was a solid hit laden record.  It peaked at #2 on Billboard on a 109 week chart run.  It came to the world in October 1981, almost exactly a year after Zenyatta Mondatta.  At this point they were still getting successively bigger, this one has hit the 3 million triple Platinum mark in the US to date (last certified 2001) and another million plus the rest of the world, only eclipsed by the follow-up Synchronicity and it's 8 million plus 2-3 more worldwide.

I prefer the album hits like "Omegaman," "Secret Journey" (#46 Billboard Hot 100), "Rehumanize Yourself" and "Invisible Sun" to overheard mega-hits like "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" (#3 Billboard) and "Spirits In The Material World" (#11) but even with "Spirits..." I'll start to zone it on the drums.  Some of the deeper tracks like "One World" and "Hungry For You" seem a little fillerish, but not particularly out of character for the band.

The 8-track order is rejiggered a bit so you don't get the hits top loaded in the 2 opening slots with "Every Little Thing.." opening the 2nd track and "Spirits..." remaining the opener.  "Darkness" still closes the album.  The tracks all fit neatly so there are no fade out track splits.

A good AOR post-New Wave pop straddler.
