After their big commercial breakout in 1986, Skylarking, XTC followed that up in 1989 with Oranges & Lemons. I got a cheap original copy of the CD a year or two ago and never really focused on it before. That said, you could say that with most of their catalogue, even the ones I bought which is most of the 80's releases, some later ones and even the Dukes of Stratosphere. One of the ultimate "for further review" bands for me.
Two tracks stood out for me: the track that had a video, "The Mayor of Simpleton" and "The Loving." The rest of the double album/single CD had it's moments but felt a little long overall. Andy Partridge is gonna give you his opinion on something like "Here Comes President Kill Again." I guess he was applying that to Bush I, but there are a number of Presidents I'm sure he could dedicate that one to. "Isn't democracy wonderful?"
As for the rest, "Merely A Man" is another good one. So is "Hold Me My Daddy" whose lyric I mistook for something else, but now that I know the title, that is all I can hear.
The king for a day won't rock the boat!
