Elastica were one of those bands revered by the British press and ultimately the US one that I never quite thought were all that great. The big comparison was Wire, but the songs I heard didn't really make me think of them. I will say the opening track "Line Up" sounds like "I Am The Fly," so I guess that is where that came from.
In 1995 I thought the music was a little sterile for my liking. It wasn't BAD per se, just nothing that I found to be particularly amazing. The track that I remembered most was one of the 6 videos befitting of the fastest selling album to date in the UK, "Stutter." The rest is blandly likeable bar chord driven rock. The ones I like most after a few spins are "All-Nighter" and "Waking Up." Not punk enough for punk and so forth. This peaked at #66 in the US presumably on press alone and was a Gold record here, in Canada and of course the UK. I realized today that there were two early Suede members: leader Justine Frischmann and drummer Justin Welch.
Frischmann quit music to focus on painting.
