The opening track of Randy Newman's 7th album, Trouble In Paradise was inescapable and annoying for me in 1983.  Watching the video now, it's an amusement and even an anthem given the fires going on in the area.  It opened the Grammys with younger faces the other day, so I guess that sold the CD.

That may be the only hit within, but my favorite cut on the record hands down is "I'm Different."  I'm a sucker for a lone rider anthem and this one is cinematic. Don't care who knows it, that's how it goes, he's not gonna play your gosh darn game.   Cinematic as in response from female background singers he calls "fellas."  He's gonna walk down the street and let the bluebirds carry a tune.  Why?  Cuz he's different!

"Mikey's" he posed a musical question about the Duke of Earl.  In "My Life Is Good" Bruce Springsteen poses the question "How would you like to be the Boss for a while?"  While listening the first couple times,  I thought Randy said "Blow me" but he actually says "Yeah Man! Blow Man Blow."  This made it acceptable for Late Night with David Letterman.

The stars are here even if the Boss isn't .  "The Blues" is a strong duet with Paul Simon.  The Bluesman's mom gets burned up in a factory in Springfield, Mass and his baby brother is selling his ass for a dollar bag.    Christine McVie and Lindsay Buckingham help out on "I Love L.A.," Bob Seger, Don Henley, Jennifer Warnes, Linda Ronstadt and Wendy Waldman are all on "Christmas In Capetown,"   He don't drink the way he used to.  That little kid cutting in and out of the crowd on a skateboard is all grown up now.   Rickie Lee Jones shows up on "Miami" where Randy tells us has the best dope in the world.

Whatever happened to the fucking Duke of Earl???
