Hell's Ditch was a peak period Pogues album I flat out forgot about yet pretty much remembered every track on it. I guess I always considered Rum Sodomy & The Lash and If I Should Fall From Grace With God the bands twin towers and everything else was a bit of an afterthought. Hell's Ditch however is uniformly excellent start to finish.
The big hit on here for me was "Rain Street." Close to it is the other street song that opens the record "The Sunnyside of the Street." My old friend Mary Lou Lord used to cover "Sayonara" to the point where her version somehow replaced the original in my mind.
I saw the band at the Orpheum around this time when Shane McGowan was on hiatus and never actually saw the band with Shane. I totally forgot Joe Strummer was in the band in 1991 if I ever even realized it in 1991. Even with covers of "London Calling" and "I Fought The Law!" They are planning to tour the UK in the Spring for the first time since Shane's passing, it has been announced.
Hell's Ditch was of more consequence than it seemed at the time.
