Bob Mould's short lived band Sugar had a quality run from 1992-1995. This 1993 release was a mini-album hot off the heels of the debut Copper Blue that just about matched if not exceeded Mould's popular fanbase both in Husker Du and his solo career. This was advanced as a heavier, darker release. Befitting of a Catholic block of some sorts, Beaster was released just before Holy Week in 1993.
Of the 6 tracks, for me one stands out above all, "Judas Cradle." I never knew what the hell he says but the lyrics say, "Have you seen the Judas Cradle/in between the Judas Cradle." I interpreted it is "you be saying a judas cradle-aaaaah, you keep sayin' judas cradle-aaaaaah." Close, but not quite right.
The other big hit was for me was the song with the sticker "JC Auto." "Look like Jesus Christ/Act Like Jesus Christ I Know I Know/Here's Your Jesus Christ/I Am Your Jesus Christ I know I know." Somehow, I got "I am your Jesus Christ I know I know" correctly even if I thought I was throwing in filler words for the real thing.
Church organs close, acoustic harmony ambience open the album. The songs are not as uncommercial as advertised, but yeah not as poppy as Copper Blue.
Other ears thought different.
