This one was an eternal curio for me, recommended either actively or in passing throughout most of the 90's by a variety of friends of mine. I never quite got over the hump with Mind Bomb or really anything else Matt Johnson put out as The The, This is the only one I ever bought. Listening to this today is like breaking it out of the shrink on the very first day level of familiarity.
Mind Bomb is loaded with all-stars in the band. Johnny Marr is in here on guitar, Julian Cope's bass player James Eller and session player David Palmer are the main band, but Sinead O'Connor rears her head on "Kingdom of Rain." Danny Thompson, who I just mentioned from John Martyn the other day plays upright bass on "August & September." The one name keyboardist Wix who went on to tour with McCartney is on here as well. The other singles with corresponding videos included "Gravitate To Me," "The Beat(en) Generation" and "Armageddon Days Are Here." That is half the album right there as it is only 8 tracks.
After about 5 listens over the last couple days, I still find this album impenetrable on some level. "The Beat(en) Generation" is the catchy one and after that it's just soundscapes and dour assessments ruminating over war, religion and the misery of mankind. Normally I would assume this would be the recipe for a great album. A Gen X take on The Final Cut with sweeping U2isms to cap off the 80's.
The sword fits nicely in that dove.
