"Purple is their masterpiece"-The Pinch Point editor after some back and forth texting on STP

I managed to ignore Stone Temple Pilots save for the insufferable "Sex Type Thing" from their first album Core.  I had a mental note that my friend, the editor of Pinch Point, unexpectedly thought highly of them, so with that in mind I got the first 2 cds last year in a dollar lot.  I actually enjoyed Purple.  There are tons of heavy guitar all over it and the Alice In Chains/Pearl Jam sounding hybrid that is Scott Weiland had its vocal moments.  You almost forget how thoroughly the Grunge revolution made even these types of commercial bands loud and proud guitar rock.

For me, my favorite was the opener, "Meat Plow" for the melody in the line "I've got a lover/and she shows me how" done with such abstract authority he puts Eddie Vedder to shame.  That's always a good sign, but I felt things could go either way.   I found in this case, there are plenty of solid tracks on Purple.  Something like "Big Empty" might not have been my favorite if it came on the radio in 1994, but in the context of this album it sounds like good Gen X post-cool.  Same with the video tracks "Interstate Love Song" and "Vaseline."

Sometimes you need 30 years to reexamine whether something is any good.
