Ronstadt's first label released this gold selling compilation to CAPITOL-IZE on her ascending stardom codified with her Asylum releases.  When Ronstadt bolted, her deal had her doing Don't Cry Now for Asylum then back to Capitol for her contractual obligation Heart Like A Wheel.  That 1974 album was a double platinum breakthrough rock and pop hit maker that her previous work wasn't.

She certainly had some pop hits dating back to 1967 with the Stone Ponys "Different Drum."  However, her solo career in 1969-1973, including her Asylum debut with her pal Peter Asher veered more country. A Retrospective gets to license one track from Don't Cry Now ("Silver Threads and Golden Needles") presumably in exchange for Asylum to raid the cabinet for 1976's Greatest Hits which to date has been certified Platinum in the US 7 times over.

Looks like Capitol got the short shrift, but these years outside of Heart Like A Wheel didn't really sound like what she did later.  Sure she does Dylan ("I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" from Hand Sown...Home Grown) and Jackson Browne ("Rock Me On The Water from her self-titled 1972 album).  The 60's AM pop of the Stone Ponys sounds like another world.  Overall, this compilation does a good job of giving an overview of 1967-1974, but it has been revised in 2006 for the more exhaustive The Best of Linda Ronstadt: The Capitol Years.  This one has all the makings of taking quick advantage of the marketplace.

A retrospective replaced by another retrospective.
