The American Graffiti soundtrack that came in 1973 was perhaps the best proof that Rock 'n' Roll was not dead from the period Elvis went into the Army until the Beatles hit America. For me the only thing that keeps the album from being an A+ perfect document is the Wolfman Jack patter that obliterates the beginning of some of the songs. Yes, the Wolfman is a great backdrop personality for the film but the element of surprise in his live radio pattern disintegrates if the album is played more than once.
I bought this reissue new at Strawberries in the early 80's, the gatefold cover replaced with a paper insert. It sold in 2019 for $2.99 but I bought it again earlier this year in a cheap lot of $2 or $3 records. It was the same 1980 reissue with some of the cleanest vinyl known to man (or woman!). So clean it was bizarre that the blemish was that the previous owner magic markered the letters M or W on the cover and labels. Still, it sold for over $12 as part of a $75 order. Lots to write about this week!
The songs within are all great and you'd have to buy a bunch of 45's to have it all in one place when this came out. Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino as well as Beach Boys might command multiple records in ones collection but it is nice to have Frankie Lymon''s "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" or Joey Dee's "Peppermint Twist" or The Big Boppers "Chantilly Lace" in one place.
Some of us here still remember rock 'n roll....
