Really the only question I had when listening to this great compilation is the degree of perfection--an A or an A+. This contains 16 tracks of roughly 3-minute perfection each.
Originally Atlantic released a twelve song 1968 Best of with a better cover and different track order. At the dawn of the CD era, they got British illustrator Ian Wright to do a series of covers for their best of reissue series. For the era they didn't date that poorly. In fact, I was tricked into thinking they were actual 60's covers as opposed to some of the pastel garbage you see from early 80's compiled 60's comps.
I was hemming and hawing a few weeks back that Wolfman Jack obliterated the American Graffiti soundtrack edition of "Green Onions." Here it kicks off the proceedings in all it's one hit wonder glory. But then the real fun starts right after when the sequel "Mo' Onions" kicks in. You thought you had enough at the fade, but wait!
Whether Lewis Sternberg is playing bass or his 1963 replacement Donald "Duck" Dunn, the music here is remarkably consistent. It should be noted that Isaac Hayes filled in for Booker T on the track "Boot-Leg" with it's added sax from Charles Axton and trumpet from Wayne Jackson. It fact, it was supposed to be issued as a Mar-Keys single but Booker T & The MG's were selling records.
Art sometimes met commerce halfway in the 20th century.
