I had a run of Mercury Rev last week of 3 pieces from two different buyers. A couple EP's sold and this was one of them from the Deserter's Songs album. I was a big fan of that and when I was in the UK around that time, so I picked up this UK companion EP I had never seen before. Oddly enough, I have another copy of it from a consignment collection from Australia with additional tracks not on this one. I'm going to assume that in the UK it was split up over two releases since this was designated as "CD 1."
The bonus tracks found here are covers and sure enough neither are streamable which is very rare for an artist of this stature. I did link the video for the feature track "Opus 40" which I knew very well from that album in it's day. I did not however until today see the art-tastic video of "Opus 40." The first cover was Dylan's "He Was A Friend Of Mine" that really was a"Trad" credit and maybe done best by the Byrds. This accidental credit to Dylan was started by Dave Van Ronk all the way back to '62 on his Dave Van Ronk, Folksinger album. The other cover here is BJ Thomas' "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" which every child of the 70's knows even if they were born too late to see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in the theatre.
I probably bought it for the "Dylan cover."
