This compiles the peak of Disco top 40 circa 1978 where most of these tracks dominated the radio. Lots of one offs along with Casablanca stars like Donna Summer, Cher and the Village People whose mega-hits "Last Dance," "Take Me Home" and of course "Y.M.C.A." are featured within. Chic, who are in a class of their own, open the album with the biggest hit within, the inescapable #1 "Le Freak."
The real treat are the one-hit wonders. Karen Young never made the top 40 with "Hot Shot" but it was a #1 Billboard club hit. The male unison "Hot Shot" chant you think is going to end the song is so nice you have to hear it twice. Michael Zager band's lone top 40 hit peaked at #36 in March '78, with it's "ooh-ooh's." Instant Funk had some other dance hits, but their lone pop Billboard top 40, "I've Got My Mind Made Up" peaked at #20 in February 1979. The catch phrase there was "Say What?" Who could forget Musique's #1 club hit that was a bit too dirty for the pop charts with the oft-repeated "BUSH!, BUSH!...In The Bush?"
The other dominant one hit wonders are Cheryl Lynn's "Got To Be Real" and Alicia Bridges "I Love The Nightlife." They both have an extremely distinctive vocal hook. What's your naaaaame-ahhh. What you feeeel---ahhh. What you knoooow-ahhhh. To be real! I love the nightlife! I've got to boogie! On the disco-aaaaah ahhhh, oh yeah! Lightning never strikes twice with this sort of brilliance.
You even get a French Disco via Switzerland tribute to America by Patrick Juvet called "I Love America!"
Happy 4th of July! Freak Out!
