Somehow I never had the debut from Molly Hatchet until a couple years ago on the recommendation of the Pinch Point editor. I forgot what he liked in particular, I'm gonna guess "Gator Country" which is the second of a great 1-2 punch opening with the leadoff "Bounty Hunter."
"Bounty Hunter" shows us a world where $500 will get your head blown off no matter the outlaw running running from the noose or enforcer just looking for a payday. That it is from the viewpoint of the bounty hunter makes no difference. He is an outlaw himself. "Gator Country" goes down all the southern rock legends and their towns to show they ain't shit and Florida is where it's at. A little boasting, a little ballbusting, all good clean fun. When Danny Joe Brown and his country boys visit New York's "punks and high heel steppers" they come packin' heat! Everybody that played on this record from 1978 is now deceased so I guess that boastful roughness has limits.
The second side opens with a standout version of the Allman Brothers Bands' "Dreams I'll Never See" (or just "Dreams") found on the Allmans debut album. The album closer "Trust Your Old Friend" has a bit of a Thin Lizzy feel.
Outlaws on the loose. Running. Running...
