Rykodisc compiled this promo sampler in 1992 when they were releasing three titles. The first was a reformatting of Third/Sister Lovers back to the intended track order that PVC issued in the late 70's. I had a copy of that on CD before I interned at Ryko from the cutout bin at Strawberries after their distributor in the US went bankrupt in the late 80's. The second was the found recordings of too young to die Chris Bell which added tracks to his "I Am The Cosmos" b/w "You And Your Sister" single that was released in his lifetime. That album is still titled I Am The Cosmos to this day. Lastly, Ryko issued Live which were 1974 recordings from WLIR that have since been reissued as such. The cover the first two albums forever in the clutches of Fantasy, the label of Saul Gaentz that caused John Fogerty such consternation.
With this promo there was a then unreleased track of "Psychedelic Stuff" by Chris Bell tacked on at the end that has since been officially issued on the Keep An Eye On The Sky compilation. BIg Star are getting a little bit of a 50th anniversary resurgence for their second album Radio City with the lone surviving member, drummer Jody Stephens touring with some influenced all-stars like Mike Mills from REM, Chris Stamey from the DB's, Chris Auer from The Posies and Pat Sansone of Wilco. After death, nothing moves CD's that have been sitting around collecting dust on a shelf since the 90's more than touring activity. Really, I'd rather straight up listen to the albums themselves, but this is a nice little sampler. I put together the tracks on Spotify so you the reader can get the true experience that is A Little Big Star. A compilation lost to the sands of time even as the music lives on.
Every song is familiar.
