Uniformly excellent, Sweet's 3rd album after 2 major label one offs for Columbia & A&M became a bonafide hit.  Whoda thunk Sweet's mug superimposed over two anime videos would've made hitmakers out of Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd?  It took almost 4 years, but Girlfriend finally went Gold in 1995 along with the follow-up 100% Fun.

But in 1992, all bets were off for "credible" records rooted in 80's alt rock and 70's punk.  Thank Nirvana, Janes Addiction, Big Star, whatever you like.   1992 was the year Matthew Sweet became a star.  I saw him early on the tour cycle of this one at T. T. The Bears in Cambridge.  My favorite track was the opener "Divine Intervention."  Truth be told, I never really liked the hit title track that much, but it sounds good and guitary upon current listen.

The rest that stood out for me were the Dylanesque "Does She Talk?" followed by "Holy War."  On the pop side there is "Evangeline" and "I Wanted To Tell You."  The rest are all pleasant for a divorce album which this was.  Most of it I remember from a 30+ year break in listening to this.  Maybe overall just a bit long: an artifact of it's era.

The same buyer of this bought two later 90's titles that I'm less familiar with, so I'll be catching up with those over the next few days.

Until then, it is Richard Lloyd's lick in "Divine Intervention" that carries the day for me.
