Baltimore's Oxes are probably one of the best practitioners of the Math Rock/Post-Rock instrumental genre at least for bands that came after the initial 90's wave in the naughty aughties. This was their second album and outside of an ATP festival performance in 2011, they went on to do other bands or I suspect, "projects." Chris Freeland did percussion for Other Colors as recently as 2016 as far as physical releases. Marc Miller plays guitar for Microkingdom and has recent duo releases with Se Jong Cho. Nat Fowler has a project with Cass McCombs called Novo Line which has releases from 2012 til 2022 as of this writing. This 22 year old release was the last bit of music I have heard from any of these musicians and I'm pretty sure the last time I saw this band live was when the building that houses the current Music Hall of Williamsburg was an independent club called Northsix around the time this CD was released.
This is one of those albums I like more for overall sound than actual specific material. Riffs repeat as certain number of times (Math, duh!). Guitars chug. Drums roll. Titles are irrelevant since looking at the the track list on Discogs while the album is playing rings not a single bell. I couldn't tell you a name of a cut on the album prior either which I also bought new upon release. None of that matters. That said, track number 6, "Take & Free Miami" is the standout for me with it's staccato chug riff. The cover has the band as a target of protesters with signs. Oxes, as one of those protest signs say on the front cover, suck Coxes.
A good place to go after Don Caballero.
