The 4th single from Born In The USA came out in February 1985, about 8 months after the release of the album. This one paired the short (2:36) side closer of Side One with an even shorter (1:50) B-side. Sometimes less is best.
A thought occurred to me while watching one of the seemingly endless variations of cinematic approach the Boss had for these videos in the mid-80's. The difference between someone like Bruce and Gary Wilson who I wrote about the other day was simple. Gary would go to that house and stay there all night in the bushes. Bruce lingers, but he ultimately doesn't act on his "darker" impulses. "I'm On Fire" was for the mainstream, after all. In and out,
As for the B-side, "Johnny Bye Bye" showed up on the Tracks compilation a decade later. It wouldn't be out of place on Nebraska style-wise. The song gets cut short just like the life of the subject. Chuck Berry's lineage winks and nods if not approves.
It's a reoccurring theme tangentially after all.
