Coming off Black Sabbath's two masterpieces: Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules, and all that 70's Rainbow history, there was nothing left for Ronnie James Dio to do but front his own band.  Like Ozzy and his first 2, Dio would come out of the gates with his strongest solo album and have enough in the tank for a just-as-good second before sharp decline.  

Dio would remind you, this was a BAND, not a MAN, but we all know different.  It's not like Dio could swap out a singer and still be Dio.  I bought this one the year it came out brand new for $7.29 at Strawberries and waited until the 90's to get a CD copy as a brand new midline.  Perhaps a record club freebee or maybe even in a chain store sale.

The songs that gave me a rush as a kid were "Rainbow In The Dark," "Stand Up and Shout" and the title track.  I had no idea any of them were videos, let alone all three.  They didn't get aired in prime time that's for sure.

I feel a little like a Debbie Downer to say some of the album feels,  if not like filler, not top tier in comparison to those two Sabbath albums or Rainbow Rising.    "Don't Talk To Strangers," "Gypsy" and the closer "Shame On The Night"  are my middle tier, through the rest were all brought out live in his later tour years. My last time was in the middle of Iron Maiden and Motorhead at the Garden.  My first was in Worcester on The Last In Line in '84.   Emotionally I wanted to give Holy Diver a straight A, but this ain't Mob Rules.

In this case best of band, not of man.
