Although any of the first 5 Iron Maiden studio releases are essential, the Paul Di'Anno albums are up there with the best of 'em.  For me, Killers reigns supreme followed by The Number of The Beast, but this one is up there as well.  As I listen, every song is a certified hit.  At the time I thought maybe it wasn't quite as good as Killers, and now I'm starting to think the gap has closed with time.  There really isn't a weak or even non-classic cut on the record.

With the first two albums, there isn't a hint of arena theatrics or swordsmanship.  Just pure rocking.  The live hits saved toward the end long after Di'Anno was gone were "Iron Maiden," "Running Free" and "Sanctuary."  Bruce Dickenson held on to those.  But the Devil is in the details.  My favorite cuts are the characters of the night, "Charlotte The Harlot" and the opening "Prowler."

You want guitar workouts? "Phantom of the Opera" does it extended and "Transylvania" does it instrumental.  The closest thing there is to a ballad is "Strange World."  What you say?  I forgot about "Remember Tomorrow?"

I can't hear ya.
