CCR's 1968 debut seemed downright embryonic in it's debut compared to the next 4 blue collar masterpieces the band shot out in 1969-70.  This could be in part that the 2 singles, "I Put A Spell On You" (Billboard #58) and "Suzie Q" (Billboard #11 in edited form) were covers of two Hawkins: Screaming Jay and Dale.  The other cover on the record is Wilson Pickett's "99 and a Half Won't Do."

The sound itself is raw and a headphone listen exposes a very simple sound with some occasional psychedelic fuckery of the era.  John Fogerty's best contribution, "Walk On The Water" is the best example of this with backtracking and that song his brother Tom has a co-write.  The tripped out harmonies of the 8 minute version didn't make the cut on the A-side of "Suzie Q."  John got his top 40 AM radio chops up later on.  The atonal wacked out San Francisco drug harmonies were relegated to the B-side and FM radio.

As for the rest of the Fogerty stuff on this 8 song record, I like "Gloomy" with it's "Spoonful" feel into some backwards psych. "Porterville" takes a fine country song and plops some background vocals and "The Working Man" seems developmental though it was thought enough to put between Spell and Suzie.

A good start with better things to come.
