The Simple Machines machine parts series was 5 in when this came out in 1992.  We already had Wedge, Wheel, Pulley and Screw.  Now on to Lever.  Only Inclined Plane was to come for the series to run it's course and be compiled once and for all in 1993.

When you think DC area (Arlington, VA was Simple Machines hometown), you think the monolith Dischord.  Three of the 4 bands on here made it on there, but not the best, Scrawl.  They were on the US Rough Trade for a while and this radio track was issued in a studio version on the midwest Feel Good All Over.  Here they do the Wire cover "Reuters" from a radio recording.  Those ladies from Columbus had something going that was consistently a cut above who they were surrounded by.

The other 3 bands do their thing in the sort of way you'd expect a late 80's/early 90's band to do it.  Competently, but not top tier.  Circus Lupus is a bit more art punk noise rock, Severin is a bit more emo-core before it became a commercial brand and Autoclave are more along the lines of the type of band I would think of with Simple Machines.  Female led indie rock.  None of it bad, all of it airplay worthy.  I might've caught any and all of these 3 bands on a bill but I honestly can't remember, which is it's own assessment.

Only so many hours in a day.
