"Some doctrinaire new wavers see the rapid success of this Jacksonville sextet as a reactionary portent, but as an old Skynyrd fan I can't get upset. They do boogie better than, let's see here, Missouri, Bama, Crimson Tide, .38 Special, Wet Willie, Atlanta Rhythm Section, or (mercy sakes) the Charlie Daniels Band. Really, they sound pretty good. Only one thing missing: content. C+"-Robert Christgau, Consumer Guide 70's
I was never "doctrinare," so Hatchet's biggest seller hits the A level for me, although nothing on the album hit me quite like the title track. As a whole, it's a good headphone crank in 2022. Loud 'n Proud. Vocalist Danny Joe Brown left us in 2005. The triple guitar attack? Dave Hlubeck in 2017, Duane Rolland in 2006 and most recently Steve Holland in 2020. Bass player Banner Thomas passed in 2017 and drummer Bruce Crump in 2015. Everyone on this record is gone. Even Frank Fazzetta, who did the artwork that surpassed the band image-wise passed in 2010.
"Flirtin' With Disaster," what a song! Travelin' down that lonesome road, feel like I'm draggin' a heavy load. That intro always gets my fist locked. As for the rest, I'd say side one was the better of the two, "Whiskey Man" into the Stones "It's All Over Now" is a good one-two punch opener.
You damn sure know what I mean.
