Sort've like The Cure filtered through an emo lens (or at least a generational one).  That means louder guitar but also cranking synths.  It's Darkwave as they call it, from LA.  Leader Wes Eisold was previously in an early aughts Boston hardcore band called Give Up The Ghost that evolved from another band American Nightmare.

I don't know how harsh I want to be on Cold Cave taking goth or it's aesthetic into the millennium.  It looks like Matador rolled the dice on one album, but singles have been cranked out as recently as last year on other labels.

The record is about how I described it, and after a few listens the songs are sticking somewhere.  I just can't get onboard for some reason.  There seems to be a subversive element exchanged for a suburban one, even if the band came out of the city.  I spent a lifetime disliking Depeche Mode, but suddenly they seem leagues better to me, and more credible in the "dark" department.  Likewise, the Cure would never force an anthem chorus like "Catacombs."

A kinder, gentler goth.
