My childhood introduction to Phil Ochs passed down to me was All The News That's Fit To Sing from his Elektra years in the early 70's when Phil was still alive. I remember when I was a little kid my mother saying he died, since she knew I had her record. I played it on my 3 year old toy record player with 60's Dylan and early Judy Collins and a bunch of Vanguard Records. I asked her how it happened and I swear she said "I think he hung himself in the park." I, being 5 going on 6 in April 1976 assumed that this meant Elm Park in Worcester, where I imagined that he might have hung himself on the wooden climbing tower that would now be banned from children. I myself fell off of it and got sprains and injuries from it, so I guess I associated it with something in the park that someone could hurt themselves on. I have never seen any proof of Phil hanging himself in a park, but he did indeed hang himself at 35.
As for acquiring Tape From California, it was much later on in a record store half off sale. The main reason? The title track was covered by Squirrel Bait which was a favorite song of mine they did and I wanted to hear the original. Simple as that. The 13+ minute "When In Rome" in the middle of side two also seemed familiar to me. Maybe I heard it on WCUW's folk show in the 70's without ever knowing who did it.
Excellent record to revisit.
