Endless Summer was the 1974 compilation of early 60's Beach Boys that made a commercial comeback with a number one album and over two years charting in the US.  This ushered in Mike Love's artless era.  Stripped of some of their best music.  No "Sloop John B."  Not even "Good Vibrations" was on this until it was tacked on in the digital era.  They wanted a  certain beach vibe without negativity or weirdness, although the hippie longhairs were on the cover.  Their unshaved mugs  were later scrubbed for the even longer charting 2003 compilation Sounds of Summer and it's antiseptic sun over water cover.  More appealing for corporate universality.

Revisionist historians like to say there was some sort of Beatles/Beach Boys battle.  These are the type of people who think Pet Sounds is better than Sgt. Pepper.  Assholes.  But not as bad as the conservative “family” anti-rock audience that Endless Summer ultimately ushered in.  Damaged Brian Wilson was no longer needed except trotted out for a reunion hither and yon.

Yesterday I wrote about Chuck Berry's post prison vision of early of 60's high school from the eyes of a grown up musician.   The Beach Boys offer a very different idea of how school should be looked at.  While Chuck's character couldn't wait to get out, Brian Wilson implored the kids to be TRUE to your school, just like you would to your GIRL.  Fisticuffs may have been implied to maintain this honor, but not any kind of real threat.  The Beach Boys were not a gang.. Wilson took a lickin' from his manager-dad to the point of hearing loss, but he fought his war inward.

Despite the annoying presentation, the songs are undeniable.  For me it's "Shut Down," "I Get Around," "Surfin' USA," "Help Me, Rhonda," "All Summer Long" and my favorite "Let Him Run Wild."

Let him run!
