Chuck Berry's big comeback after serving a year and a half in prison for taking liberties across state lines with a 14 year old coat check girl. St. Louis to Liverpool came out December 1964 on the heels of a British invasion that not only worshiped him, but covered him as if he was a member of their band.
More than anyone, Chuck Berry IS the great American songbook as far as Rock n' Roll is concerned. You can make an argument that he IS Rock 'n Roll. He didn't shy away from going right back to the American Top 40 with "You Never Can Tell" about a teenage wedding. Pierre and Mademoiselle have 700 records of rockin rhythm and Jazz AND a '57 Chevy parked outside. What could be better? Even those old folks over 30 approve!
Nether of the hit singles from earlier that year ("No Particular Place To Go" was the other) open the sides. The album kicks off with a "Memphis" sequel "LIttle Marie." Chuck can cover himself just like the Beatles and Stones. "Go Bobby Soxer" has a sick drum roll refrain. She'll be up all night with Chuck at his club and still make it to school on time. Chuck was 38 when this was released.
I've heard people complain about filler on this album but I can't hear any of it. Everything seems to have purpose and the guitars sound great, particularly in headphones. Instrumentals back to back "Liverpool Drive" and "Night Beat" sound exceptional to me. One fast, one slow. "Merry Christmas Baby"? Why not? The album closes with "Brenda Lee" another Bobby Soxer, a know-it-all Sophomore who ranks 3rd in her class at Central High. She can't wait to get out.
It is the "Promised Land" after all.
