One night in the late aughts, I was coming out of the Ave B club Midway where I worked booking and stumbled out of there in the daylight morning hours, escaping the after hours party under the gate to grab a sandwich at Sunny and Anne's and walk home which at that time was 9th and C. This particular morning I noticed a stack of 20 records leaning up against the garbage with nobody in sight. I grabbed them and walked home.
I often thought to myself as sales from that find have trickled out over the past decade how those records got to be there. I imagined a drunk DJ left them there after a shift perhaps at coke party central Le Souk up the street. Le Souk's spillover got alot of heat from the community board not wanting the lower half of Ave B to be another Ludlow. That caused our little rock club to get a steady stream of tickets by the quality of life units sweeping the area.
These were mostly techno 12" from the NYC label Ultra so maybe the record leaver was an employee of theirs. Techno isn't my bag, and I don't know my style of review of start to finish listening would be appropriate for a club record, but it's my blog so who cares. As far as techno records go I liked this track. The catchphrase 'We are taking over space" is authoritative and makes for a good proclamation. The four on the floor and dance electronics is what you'd expect on a deep trance twelve inch. I'll leave it to you to differentiate the different mixes. One time through was enough for me and I don't want to diminish the simple enjoyment of the basic mix by relistening to the whole thing to A/B the differences and report the minutae.
We are Taking! Over! Space!!!
