Excellent single from then 20 year veteran,  Jazz Pop vocalist Peggy Lee.   Both of these songs can be found on the 1969 album Is That All There Is?  Punk rockers may know this from it's uncredited inclusion of the A-side cover by Christina on the first Rodney on the Roq compilation, which is how I discovered the song.  Supposedly it is from a "forthcoming" production called International Wrestling Match, but I see no evidence outside of a Peggy Lee songbook for sale on Ebay that this was ever produced.

Peggy Lee's version isn't much different except she doesn't break out the 'ludes, which supposedly offended the songwriters Leiber and Stoller they had a 24 year injunction on the official Christina release.  She sticks to booze throughout the entire song.  A classic comic showtune monologue, and that's coming from someone who doesn't really like showtunes.  The surprise for me is the B-side "Me and My Shadow" which was an excellent minimalist piano and bass number.  It sounds fairly contemporary, and even tougher than much of what passes as "alternative" today.  No surprise the fine print credits Randy Newman as conductor and arranger. It does blow one's mind that this beat out Dusty Springfield's standard "Son Of A Preacher Man" for a Grammy in 1970 for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

For the well rounded square.
