For whatever reason, I've ignored the excellent Vintage Violence the way I didn't with Paris 1919 or even Guts & Fear. It meant nothing that this was SO close to the Velvets era. This is just one of those records that was in every "nice price" bin all my life. I finally broke down and bought it new sometime after this 2001 remaster with a couple bonus tracks. It also had a “best buy” reduced price manufacturers sticker, like it’s vinyl predecessor.
I actually saw Cale at Nightstage, a small long gone club in Cambridge, MA, around 1989. An early set, him alone at the piano and still I didn't pick up the easiest find of Cale's catalog at that time. Paris 1919 was not yet reissued. Columbia always kept him in print along with Raw Power, Warner Bros. and Island weren't always so kind. The CD reissue era for deep catalog didn't really get under way until the 90's.
"Charlemagne" is the only song I really remembered from this. "Gideon's Bible" is probably the best. Two versions of "Fairweather Friend" back to back is a bit much.
I know, I know, more time is owed to Vintage Violence in this hectic world of ours.
