This Santana album I managed to ignore completely despite it being a #10 platinum album, the biggest until the Clive Davis comeback era.  This double was a mix of 1977 studio tracks and a Greatest Hits Live approach since 1974's live Lotus was deemed to be uncommercial for the US market until it was issued in 1991.  A shocking story, since you'd think Carlos Santana was big enough to do what he wanted to and was putting out high charting albums with John McLaughlin and Buddy Miles.

Upon listening to this album a couple times, it is clear that this period with Greg Walker on vocals is a transitional time to the AOR period that was to follow with hits like "Winning" and "Hold On" in the early 80's.  Moonflower has feet firmly rooted in jamming out, but with an R&B approach taking hold with a new vocalist  Walker made his debut with the previous years Amigos album.  That album has my favorite live track on this, "Dance Sister Dance."  He bowed out as a core member after Inner Secrets in 1978, although Santana continued to use him on solo projects and Santana releases well into the future

The Zombies cover "She's Not There" was a top 40 hit, but I swear I never really heard Santana's version much if at all in the 70's despite being glued to Top 40 radio.  Mainstays like "Black Magic Woman" and "Soul Sacrifice" pad this album out in their Stereo Review '77 era glory.  The bonus tracks on the 2003 Legacy double CD edition tacks on 3 single edits.

For the man that has Aja on the coffee table and has already listened to Blow by Blow this morning.

You know who you are.
