Some things look better on paper. Tha Alkaoliks were a curiosity of mine in the late 90's. Alcoholic themed rap as opposed to odes to weed or oppression seemed like an original take. How reckless can they take it?
Well, for a start they seemed to have some serious connections. The king of reckless in my mind for 90's hip hop has to be Ol' Dirty Bastard. He's my favorite, the "Flavor Flav" role in Wu-Tang and he helps out on "Hip Hop Drunkies." The concept brings the ruckus on paper, but is overwhelmed in my mind by the one after it. The best track of the album, "Aw, Shit." A long list of things that can happen after the phase is uttered. I can relate 100%.
Overall they seemed a little tamer than I wanted. Like many other rap records from that time period the album is bloated with celebrities and skits. Having icons of the day talk about how THEY like to get drunk between tributary tracks. Nas likes--what is it-Tequila? LL likes some other mango tangerine flavored fruity shit before he eats pussy or whatever the fuck he does. Then he busts out some gin with a splash of cranberry to get to that next level. A revelation!
"Contents Under Pressure" closes the album on a high note. They have got to sell more than 500K this time! The pizza isn't here! They've run out of beer! The engineer might be queer!
Hard times indeed.
