A greatest hits album missing my two favorite Queen of Soul songs: "Rock Steady" which wasn't out yet when this was released and "Think" which was left off despite being a #7 Billboard hit.
So the album is top loaded with my favorites of the generous 14 track 2 side selection. The definitive version of Phil Spector's "Spanish Harlem" and Don Covay's "Chain of Fools." I guess next for me is Bacharach/David's "Say A Little Prayer." "Respect" I'm a little burnt on despite it's greatness and "You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman" I can live without ever hearing Aretha's or Carole King's verison again.
Interesting and refreshing to hear "Let It Be" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" in alternate realities from their original composers.
For Aretha, I probably would opt to put on Young Gifted and Black or Lady Soul or I Never Loved A Man or Amazing Grace or a live show I heard before "Jump To It" came out that I really enjoyed a year or two ago. But this is what sold, so Greatest Hits as they were thought to be in 1971 were what I heard. The cover had taken the brunt of a storage flood I'm guessing around Hurricane Sandy that went unnoticed until the box got graded 5 years ago, so the VG vinyl became housed in a F cover saved from a P only by a sturdy clean spine and an unsplit cover. The condition when I originally bought it went for $13.99 just a few months ago. Maybe the buyer had better cover with a damaged record. Damn thee Keepers!
Yes, of course "Respect" is the best of the 14.
