The peak period of Ann Arbor, MI grunge band was their singles period compiled on 1991's Drive It Off.  This was a promo single issued in 1990 that I bought, unaware that it was a "not for sale" promo until looking at it recently.  Or I just forgot.    Last week someone threw down for 4 Big Chief singles and this one was my favorite of the batch (although "Blowout Kit" aka "Time Dirt Money" was the one I liked above all others).  The A-side "Get Down and Double Check" was a quality, post-Superfuzz Bigmuff-shagger.

The B-side on this "Built Like An Ordeal" was my next-in-line favorite overall.  These were hair flying, straight up rock jams.  Singer Barry Henssler, from the Necros, certainly put his time in.  Big Chief lasted only a decade.  Guitarist Phil Durr went on to Five Horse Johnson before passing in 2019.  I seem to remember booking them at Midway in the late aughts and seeing them at CB's a few times  (with Brought Low?  Gin Mill? These are the locals that come to mind when I think of a bill with Five Horse Johnson) without making any Big Chief connection, although I certainly saw Big Chief plenty throughout the 90's.

All my main Big Chief memories involve flying hair, time, dirt and no money.

It was the Sub Pop way for a time.
