At some point in the early aughts I got into completist mode with Julian Cope.  My friend Kevin Wyzzard was big fan, and I had recently got turned onto You've Got A Problem With Me, which was an indie release nothing like his Island years.

"5 O'Clock World" was the opening track of My Nation Underground, which was hot of the heels of Julian's biggest commercial success "World Shut Your Mouth" the year before.  At the time I was deeply disappointed with the Syd Barrett comparisons when I heard what I thought was over produced glop for Saint Julian.  This continued at Island although Cope got less commercial and more interesting as the years rolled by.

This UK single which was also released as a 10" continues with "S.P.Q.R."  You rattle his chains, feed Julian to the lions then it is time for a 12 minute plus epic Doors-sounding "Reynard in Tokio."This live track was a take on "Reynard The Fox" from 1984's Fried LP.

So of all the Julian Cope titles in this world I've had and listened to, this is probably the one I ignored the most.  Easily a "play it once, file it away" sort of title.  Not bad.  I tend to prefer certain eras and albums of Julian.  Fried, 20 Mothers and the aforementioned You've Got A Problem With Me are my favorites along with the Teardrop Explodes catalog.  You might also want to check out his tomb of a book The Megalithic European. and Julian's website Head Heritage.

A true well rounded British pop star that went fringe, not the other way around.

UPDATE: Had a chat with the aforementioned Kevin after this was published.  We both had a lightening bolt discovery.  He remembered "5 O'Clock World" was a mid-60's hit by The Vogues.  Despite it being a #4 US hit in 1965, I never knew it or the band from Pittsburgh suburb Turtle Creek until today, despite a run of 60's hits.  Then I casually said that I was surprised that Julian would open an album with a cover and use it as a video.  "That song opened the album?" Kevin exclaimed.  Despite being a huge Cope fan, Kevin forgot this factoid.  Amazing what fun facts are unearthed in the world of the Reverse Collector.
