The Nuge was riding high on "Cat Scratch Fever," when this double live release came out and became his highest charting Billboard album (#13, tied with Scream Dream).
The album is stuffed with his standards. The studio version of "Stranglehold" is probably the one you are most likely to hear in a bar nowadays. Some songs you hear about from people in passing like "Great White Buffalo" and "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang." Some are epics you hear less of like "Hibernation" and "Motor City Madhouse."
In 1978, Nuge was known solely for music. His hyper worded onstage banter was seen as universal rather than overtly political. Proudly from Detroit, "the murder capitol of the world!" Seeking all the "Nashville Pussy." American as apple pie that Nuge, playing to the crowd. That he sells these guitar epics with Derek St. Holmes occasionally on the mic is impressive. It couldn't be done today at this level. Hell even 5 years later it couldn't be done.
For me, I bought this used in the early 80's, played it once and filed it away. Of all of his albums, I preferred Free For All. I have to say I enjoyed this one start to finish listening to it today. Not too many hits that have been beaten into the ground. Dare someone "get mellow" at his show and they will be tossed from the facility. Get 'em up against the wall! Ted says so!
They have hired hands to do that, after all.
