With all the 20th anniversary hubbub of the Decemberist's 4th LP The Cranes Wife, I thought I might as well get the write-up out of the way. I bought this in a CD clearance lot a couple years ago and never heard it in it's day. It has since been had the reissue expansion treatment. Funny how you can ignore something so it seems new, but it is already 20 years on with additional bells and whistles.
So anyway, this is where Colin Meloy and crew seem to be discovering their inner Tull. Songs become suits and interludes become prog.on "The Island," I'm not going to get into the famed literary aspect of all this but Shakespeare's Tempest is here if you want to go down a two hour rabbit hole. A true anglophile understands only the BBC production will do. You still get Meloy's peculiar bray that ultimately makes his band interesting.
The title of the album comes from Tsuru Nyōbō, the Japanese folktale about a rescued crane that transforms into a woman to marry the man that rescued her. She takes up clothweaving to get them out of poverty under the condition he must never watch her do it. He cannot resist and when the husband sees the wife in her true crane form, the wife transforms back for good and departs forever.
Maybe it is better to not get too far under the hood with this.
