Johnny Cash's Folsom and San Quentin albums make it easy to think he did a sentence himself.  This was a falsehood although he did have a healthy arrest and short jail stints for minor offenses;  He didn't shoot anyone in Reno or anywhere else.

However, the fantasy that he was a bad boy just like the people he was playing for earned notarity.  The Folsom Prison set is excellent.  How can you go wrong with "Dark As The Dungeon," "The Long Black Veil," "I Got Stripes" or "Folsom Prison Blues?"

He had a finger on the pulse of his public where a bleeped swear  or a spat-out "faggot" shot down in "Cocaine Blues" brought a roar of approval.  Toilet humor and getting shafted as "Flushed From The Bathroom Of Your Heart" delineates got approval on the inside.  The audience appreciated this shared solidarity of a rebel with outsider rules and an impolite nature.  He saved that good boy stuff for TV time.  Even "Dirty Ol' Egg Suckin' Dog" seems hard assed in some way.  You might not need to hear this more than a couple times to appreciate the greatness.

Artifact can sometimes be enough for posterity.
