The 4th Spirit album was an "Album Rock" phenomenon with a couple singles, "Animal Zoo" in September 1970 and "Mr. Skin" much later on in October 1973 grazing the lower regions of the Billboard Hot 100 while Skin's original A-side "Nature's Way" not even doing that.  The album eventually went RIAA Gold in 1976 after peaking at #63 in Februrary 1971 on a 14 week chart run.  This was actually less of an initial chart run than the first three Spirit albums, but this is the one ultimately with the most catalog legs.

Certainly, this was the first one I had in slightly beat up from from the dollar bin.  Probably the worst place to buy any psychedelic record.  Those were records that looked AND sounded beat up.  I bought the CD remaster at some point and have gotten a couple copies in vinyl lots.  One was super clean and this one middling but it sold at a far cheaper price than I had the nice one up for.

David Briggs, who worked a long time with Neil Young, produced this and it holds up.  "Mr. Skin" had a Sly & The Family Stone feel and "Animal Zoo" could convince you it was one of CSNY's rockers except it wasn't.  The prettiest song on the record is the closer, "Soldier" and "Nature's Way" isn't that far behind and neither is "Life Has Just Begun."  I prefer these to the AM-pomp of "Morning Has Come" that fits right next to an early Chicago track.    I was wondering if these were indeed a dream per track and perhaps thematically they are.

But who, for God's sake is Dr. Sardonicus????
