There were two Jackson Browne albums my mother had and listed to regularly in the 70's: Late For The Sky and this one, The Pretender. For whatever reason I never really liked this album that much. Late For The Sky I thought was ok, but there were two stand out tracks. The title track that closes the record I have a 70's memory of hearing with a big accumulated dust clot on the needle in the 70's. The kind you just have to stop the song and brush the dust off with your finger. There is no such sound on this 8-track that sold. The other song I remember well was "Linda Paloma" It has that Mexican Mariachi sound complete with harp and mandolin. I never really thought of it that way, I just remembered the name.
The top 40 single (Billboard #23 in March '77) "Here Come Those Tears Again" get the 8-track fade out/fade in treatment here as "Your Bright Baby Blues." Considering there are only 8 songs on the album, it's more disruptive than usual to get the fade outs. Although I remember the song, I don't remember it in the "hit" sense of hearing it on the radio the way I would expect a single from 1977 that charted that high.
Rolling Stone's Record Guide had this as a 5-star canon record. I can't say say I agree.
It's not like I haven't heard it enough.
